Sleek, elegant, stylish and sporty are not words you might normally associate with a 4x4 - plus you would be exceedingly unlikely to use them all at once to describe precisely the  same 4x4. That is until the advent of Volvo Vintage Cars.

Considering bringing the utilitarian off-roader into the family leisure market, car manufacturers have striven to style it and tailor it to give  the broadest appeal, together with varying levels of success. Some attempt a 4x4/MPV cross, but some opt for a more laidback SUV picture. There's even been an attempt with a premium car maker at trying to flip its big SUV into a slick sports coupe, with notably unsleek, nay, gruesome, outcomes!

Unlike many SUVs, VOLVO handles to keep, and even enhance, the svelte lines and subtle shapes of its lightweight saloon and real estate brethren.  In fact, in case you lowered an XC60 to create it adopt a road-hugging position, then it would doubtless appear like a rather rakish property. Volvo calls it"emotional" styling.

Cabin Comfort

You would not oppose the VOLVO's inside of being overdone. It's modem, fresh, stylish and, above all, simple. The all-anthracite lower-half cut of our test case might appear laborious and dull in a few cars, but with little more to lift it than white contrast stitching and environmentally implemented smart moldings, the Volvo handles an air of clever viability. You would expect nothing less from Swedish style.

The focal point is without doubt Volvo's currently well known'floating' center console, in this case having a glowing metallic finish.  It presents an array of logically-arranged along with clearly-marked controllers - that the human-shaped air-distribution graphic being a particular case in point - that become almost instinctive at first glance. Above this and the CD slot resides the clear sat-nav display, slightly inset to decrease reflections in the window glass  found on exactly  same|identical} plane as the instruments where a rapid glimpse enables immediate visual clarity without refocusing.

Gauges - only the two - communicate the crucial details through annular analogue dials and (that word again)'drifting' pointers with digital supplemental information exhibited in their facilities|centres|facilities}. They have a chronographic appearance  for  them, but Volvo has thankfully resisted the usually Far-Eastern car producers' trend to beautify them with too much bling and elaborate illumination.

In true Volvo tradition, the chairs are well-shaped, inviting and comfortable with those in front providing a handy range of adjustment. The back compartment boasts sensible if not commodious legroom, along with the nicely contoured seat should provide three teenaged adults with comfy but comfortable traveling. The 40:20:40 split/fold seat provides a flat load floor once the one-touch release levers are worked.

Zoned climate control gives a level (actually, a number of degrees) of heating/cooling versatility and clean cabin air utilizing filtration and Volvo's Clean Zone Interior Package, an advanced air-purging system.

Driving Dynamics

Five-cylinder engines create a deal of awareness, being as responsive as a'four' yet almost as easy as a'six','' even though the smoothness bit is not as apparent with an oil burner.  Once warmed up, though, the D5 is a nice enough diesel, delivering lively performance in concert with all an smooth-shifting six-speed Geartronic transmission, and which likewise includes Sport mode and manual override.

Having originally thought the steering over-weighted, a few miles after it appeared to sense quicker and more receptive. Speed-dependent assistance is available as an option, based on version, with a user-selection facility.

In normal conditions the all-wheel disk process is front-biased, with torque re-apportioned through the computer-controlled hydraulic clutch because readily available traction changes. Volvo's Instant Traction is designed to help with standing begins. Ride is quite firm (possibly as a result of BMW X3 having an XC60 benchmark) but provides car-like cornering and handling, although well-judged initial compliance takes the bite from several street imperfections.

The Volvo's City Safety helps avoid low-speed mishaps; Collision Caution with Vehicle Brake along with Adaptive Cruise Control with Distance Alert work at greater speeds; BUS shows that your blind areas; DAC and LDW attempt to prevent you falling asleep or straying from lane; along with IDIS delays phone calls as you deal with complex driving situations. These systems may be had as well as Volvo's renowned security design and engineering aided by Roll Stability Control, Hill Descent Control, Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, along with Trailer Stability Assist.  Oh, also there's Park Help...

Pulling Performance

fat offers a good perimeter to accommodate many appropriate caravans, and rectangular, straight-edged door cushions give a much better platform than many for towing mirrors.

The XC60 proved to be lively, turning into a 0-60mph time of 14.5 seconds despite initial take-off being calmed from the automatic gearbox. . Hill begins were equally trouble-free. The ensemble felt quite unruffled in urban conditions, possibly as a result of assurance of City Safety, also with a 30-50mph time of 6.1 sec was rarely at risk of holding up other traffic. Normal automobile mode coped well, smoothly locating itself in the perfect equipment at the perfect moment.

The steering may sometimes feel a bit stranger in tight, twisty urban conditions but enhanced at higher speeds to develop into smooth, responsive and precise, at which the Volvo sensed in full control through strings of minor-road bends. On steep descents manual equipment selection could be helpful, but the strong brakes with their various driver- assistance systems supplied reassurance.

In motorway speeds the XC60 tracked straight and true, though on a really windy test day some buffeting has been seasoned, as was some enforced deviation offline from big overtaking trucks and coaches.

Ride comfort in all conditions was company, though rarely uncomfortably so, and also the XC60 was able to damp out the caravan's bump reactions very competently over all but the worst ruts.

Verdict

Think about the SUV as a tall, slinky, blonde Swede that will not have a blonde moment, yet is very XC.
