The same as its predecessor the C-Type, the D-Type Jaguar sports car had been first|had been} built with the sole purpose of winning Le Mans.

This it did in style, winning the 1955, 1956, and 1957 races. |} In actuality, in 1957, the D-Type chose the first four and sixth place, and completely routed the opposition. It had been Jaguar's most prosperous race car.

Long before the 1953 success at Le Mans from the C-Type, Jaguar cars had decided to create its replacement which could keep the business ahead of the contest, which had been mostly, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, and Maserati.

In 1953, the first D-Type prototype, together with|using} stairs XKC401, was put through its paces in Belgium, where it reached a top rate of 178.3 miles, which had been approximately 30 mph quicker than its predecessor.

From the late 1950's, the initial 3.4 litre engine was increased to 3.8 litres which currently developed 265 bhp, a high speed of 179 mph, along with a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 secs.

It had been equipped with disk brakes all round, independent suspension at front and a solid axle at the back, {and|and also|also} dry sump lubrication which decreased the height of the engine.

After rigorous testing, it had been found that the construction, fibreglass materials and resins weren't sufficiently strong to defy the car's power, and thus the idea was lost.

In February 1957, there was a severe fire at the Coventry factory which destroyed five D-Types, jointly with essential jigs and tools, also damage to the production line.

Because of this, this marked the end of creation of the D-Type sports automobile.
