A review of The Lotus Europa Series 1 Sports Car, covering development, important features, and technical data of this the eleventh model in the Pictures Of Lotus Sports Cars variety.

In this guide, I offer a nostalgic look in the Lotus Europa Series 1, one of an elite set of classic automobiles, which was fabricated during the period 1967 to 1968.

The Europa Series 1 Type 46

From the 1960's, the notion of a mid-engined sports automobile was considered as the unique preserve of racing automobiles and exotic street cars.

Thus, when Lotus, understood mostly as a producer of racing automobiles, introduced the Europa in 1966it became the first vehicle manufacturer to offer  a mid-engined sports car in a cost that lots of people could afford.

In reality, the motor has been positioned, for optimal balance and managing, involving the passenger compartment and the back wheels.

From the mid 1960's, the racing automobiles produced by Lotus had gained world wide prominence.

One of the explanations for this was a mid-engined Lotus had drifted aside contest to win at the 1965 Indianapolis 500 racewith the result that other racing automobile producers switched from conventional front engine design to a mid-engine format.

Though Colin Chapman had contemplated the notion of a mid-engined road automobile, before the mid 1960's, there weren't any appropriate engines and drivetrains, available in volume, that were realistically priced.

To complicate matters, his existing production facilities were fully stretched building the most powerful Lotus Elan, in all its variants.

But in 1965the image changed, when Renault established the Renault 19 saloon, its first front wheel drive automobile.

Following his options, he made a decision to get additional manufacturing facilities near Norwich, about the site of a WW2 US Air Force Base.

The strategy was to get a mid-engined sports car, powered by a changed Renault 16 motor and drivetrain, which could be built and built by Lotus.

He was eager to construct a foothold for his street cars in Europe, and take advantage of the newly created European Common Market.

For this end, his agreement with Renault said that, for its first few decades, he'd focus his marketing and advertising efforts to your new automobile solely on the Continent.

He originally wanted to name his automobile the"Europe" however, owing to legal constraints, was made to alter it into Europa.

Furthermore, an extra benefit resulting from this agreement was that Lotus would no longer be reliant upon Ford for its engines|motors}.

The car would have bolt wheels, along with the steering would consist of disks in the front and drums in the back.

An important characteristic of the mid-engine design was that it would greatly reduce body roll, offer a higher level of traction, and create the handling characteristics associated with Lotus cars.

Like previous Lotus road automobiles, the new model would be offered as either a mill assembled unit, or in the kind of a self assembly kit.

Regrettably, as it would turn out, the grade of this Europa would be on a level with previous models, as it would be average, at best.

The Series 1 Lotus Europa sports automobile, also known as the Form 46, has been a 2 door, mid-engined, fixed head coupe, that was launched in December 1966.

The first Europa was created as a club sport racer, to work as a replacement for your Lotus Seven.

Much like the Elan, it had a fibreglass moulded body fitted into a steel backbone chasssis, which could continue to keep down the weight to a minimum.

It'd independent coil spring suspension all around, with a kind of MacPherson strut on the trunk.

exclusion of the doors, bonnet, and boot, the fibreglass body has been created as a single unit.

excellent handling.|}

had been fitted with a lightweight aluminum metal, altered Renault 16, 1470 cc, inline 4-cylinder, overhead valve engine, developing 82 bhp, in comparison with the 52 bhp from the normal unit.

It had a maximum speed of 121 mph, with a 0-60 mph time of 9.3 secs.

Just 296 units of this Series 1 Type 46 were built.

To keep manufacturing costs low, the automobile was of a simple structure, with side windows that would not move, fixed seats, a deficiency of grips on the door, no inner door covers, along with a aluminium dashboard.

However, the subsequent Series 1A and 1B had detachable side windows, a wooden dashboard, and inner door panels that were able to adapt the windows, even when removed.

Back vision consisted of a narrow slot behind the driver's head, which just gave a view directly to the back.

general, 348 units of the Series 1A and 1B were assembled, which meant 644 Europa Series 1 were eventually assembled.

Europas were quite delicate, with the lightweight body subject into easy destruction.

The steel chassis central beam was bonded into the fibreglass body, and this helped reinforce stiffness, but which makes fixing unduly complicated.

Additional the steel spine was more prone to rust.

This marked the conclusion of this Lotus Europa Series 1 Type 46

Maybe this walk down memory lane May Have replied, or at least shed light on, a possible question:
