An overview of this Lotus Europa Series 1 Sports Car, covering evolution, important characteristics, and technical information of the version in the Lotus Race Car For Sale range.
In this guide, I provide a nostalgic look at the Lotus Europa Series 1, among an elite group of classic automobiles, which was manufactured during the period 1967 to 1968.
The Europa Series 1 Type 46
In the 1960's, the idea of a mid-engined sports automobile was considered as the unique preserve of only racing automobiles and exotic street cars.
Therefore, when Lotus, known mostly as a manufacturer of racing automobiles, released the Europa in 1966, it became the first automobile manufacturer to give a mid-engined sports vehicle at a price that many individuals can afford.
In reality, the engine was set, for optimum balance and handling, involving the passenger compartment and the rear wheels.
From the mid 1960's, the rushing automobiles produced by Lotus had gained net prominence.
Among the reasons for this is that a mid-engined Lotus had drifted aside competition to acquire the 1965 Indianapolis 500 race, with the consequence that other racing automobile manufacturers switched from traditional front engine layout to a mid-engine arrangement.
Though Colin Chapman had considered the concept of a mid-engined road automobile, until the mid 1960's, there weren't any appropriate engines and drivetrains, available in quantity, which were also realistically priced.
To complicate things, his existing production facilities were completely stretched building the most successful Lotus Elan, in all its variants.
But in 1965, the film changed, when Renault established the Renault 19 saloon, its very first front wheel drive automobile.
Following his options, he chose to get additional manufacturing facilities near Norwich, to the website of a WW2 US Air Force Base.
The plan was for a mid-engined sports car, powered by a changed Renault 16 engine and drivetrain, which will be designed and built by Lotus.
He was eager to build a foothold because of his street cars in Europe, get the most out of the newly developed European Common Market.
For the end, his arrangement with Renault stated that, for its first couple of decades, he'd concentrate his marketing and advertising efforts for the new automobile solely on the Continent.
He originally wanted to name his automobile the"Europe" but, due to legal limitations, was made to alter it to Europa.
What's more, an additional benefit resulting from that arrangement was that Lotus wouldn't more be heavily reliant upon Ford because of its own engines|motors}.
The car could have bolt on wheels, along with the steering would consist of discs at the front and drums at the rear.
A significant characteristic of the mid-engine layout is it might greatly reduce body roll, provide a higher degree of grip, and generate the handling attributes related to Lotus cars.
Like preceding Lotus road automobiles, the new version could be offered as either a mill built unit, or in the form of a self assembly kit.
Unfortunately, as it might turn out, the build quality of the Europa will be on a par with previous models, as it will be average, at best.
The Series 1 Lotus Europa sports automobile, also known as the Form 46, was a 2 door, mid-engined, fixed head coupe, which premiered in December 1966.
The original Europa was designed as a golf sport racer, to work as a replacement for its Lotus Seven.
Just like the Elan, it had a fibreglass moulded body fitted to a steel backbone chasssis, which will continue to keep down the weight to a minimum.
It had separate coil spring suspension all round, with a form of MacPherson strut on the rear.
With the exception of these doors, bonnet, and boot, the fibreglass body was created as a single unit.
It had a drag coefficient of 0.29, and superb handling.|}
It was paired with a lightweight aluminum metal, altered Renault 16, 1470 cc, inline 4-cylinder, overhead valve engine, developing 82 bhp, compared with the 52 bhp from the standard unit.
miles, with a 0-60 mph time of 9.3 secs.
Just 296 units of the Series 1 Type 46 were built.
To keep manufacturing costs low, the automobile was of a fundamental structure, with side windows which would not move, fixed seats, a scarcity of handles on the door, no inner door covers, along with a aluminium dashboard.
However, the subsequent Series 1A and 1B had detachable side windows, a wooden dashboard, and inner door panels which were capable to adapt the windows, when eliminated.
Back vision consisted of a narrow slot behind the driver's mind, which just gave a view directly to the rear.
complete, 348 units of the Series 1A and 1B were assembled, which supposed 644 Europa Series 1's were finally assembled.
Europas were quite delicate, with the lightweight body subject to easy destruction.
The steel chassis central beam was bonded to the fibreglass body, which helped reinforce stiffness, but which makes fixing unduly complicated.
Additional the steel spine has been prone to rust.
This marked the conclusion of the Lotus Europa Series 1 Type 46
Perhaps this stroll down memory lane might have replied, or shed light on, a possible question:
