from Classic to Modern

The same as its predecessor the C-Type, the D-Type Jaguar sports car had been first|had been} built with the sole purpose of winning at Le Mans.

This it did in fashion, winning the 1955, 1956, and 1957 races. |} In actuality, in 1957, the D-Type took the first four and sixth place, and completely routed the opposition. It had been Jaguar's very successful race car.

Long prior to the 1953 success at Le Mans from the C-Type, Jaguar automobiles had made a decision to develop its replacement that would keep the company ahead of the contest, which had been primarily, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, and Maserati.

In 1953, the first D-Type prototype, together with|using} chassis XKC401, has been put through its paces at Belgium, in which it attained a top rate of 178.3 mph, which had been approximately 30 mph quicker than its predecessor.

By May 1954, six-D-Types had been built, and were considered as the most advanced automobiles at that time.

There was an entry of four D-Types in the 1954 Le Mans race, however they have been no match for its powerful Ferraris.

However, in 1955, following modifications to the vehicle, it duly notched up Jaguar Cars' third Le Mans success.

Most of the D-Types were single seaters, and built especially for the race track.|}

Not only was there a 10 percent reduction in the general burden of the vehicle, but also the surface area of the front section has been reduced, so improving air circulation within the entire body.

As a consequence of wind tunnel testing, the D-Type produced 28% less drag than the C-Type, although the long nosed D-Types of 1955 were 20 percent more efficient.

The D-Type was in the forefront of sports vehicle advancement with its use of a worried skin monocoque central segment.

This has been constructed from sheets of aluminium metal containing pre-assembled fasteners, which were subsequently welded to front and rear tubular sub-frame segments to decrease weight.

The C-Type supplied the rear suspension which consisted of torsion pub perched. Later versions of the automobile used bolts, rather than welding, to allow for simple removal for repairs.

The early automobiles used a magnesium alloy frame, frame, and suspension however, by 1955, the more expensive metal was replaced with aluminium and steel equivalents.

A tubular sub-frame supported the motor, steering and front suspension.

{The D-Type Jaguar sports car was powered by a contest 3.4 litre XK engine, and connected to a four speed gearbox.|}

Using a compression ratio of 9.0:1, a revised block, bigger valves, and three twin choke Weber 45 DC03 carburettors, it developed 250 bhp at 6500 rpm, and 242 ft/lbs of torque.|}

generated a top speed of 160 mph, along with a 0-60 mph time of 5.7 secs.|}

From the late 1950's, the initial 3.4 litre engine has been increased to 3.8 litres which currently developed 265 bhp, a top speed of 179 mph, along with a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 secs.

It had been equipped with disk brakes all around, independent suspension in the front and a solid axle in the rear, {and|and also|also} dry sump lubrication that reduced the elevation of the motor.

Since the surface area of the front section was reduced, the motor has been tilted slightly so that it would fit into the engine bay. {The {result|end consequence|consequence} of this was the look of a bulge in the bonnet.|}

The 1955 D-Type sports automobile used bigger inlet and exhaust valves as well as an asymmetrical cylinder mind.

A massive fin has been positioned beneath the driver's seat in order to create aerodynamic equilibrium in cross winds when travelling at over 150 mph. The fin has been the most recognisable feature of the vehicle.

In 1955, the amount of the works cars was raised by 7.5 inches from the accession of a more nose which helped to increase top speed.

Also, the fin and driver's headrest were later redesigned to produce one unit to improve aerodynamics and reduce weight.

Produced between 1954 and 1957, the majority of its mechanical components were sourced by the C-Type.

Jaguar automobiles was eager to offer factory support to personal D-Type owners.

Originally, there were to be 100 production D-Types, however this was then reduced to 87 at August 1955.

Although a number was marketed, by early 1957 when generation will soon end, some of the remaining were converted into XKSS Jaguar sports cars, a road going version of the race car.

Later in 1957, 87 D-Types had been built, comprising 18 works automobiles, 53 personal client components, and 16 XKSS variants. Of them, just ten D-Types ever secured a place in Le Mans.

Near the end of 1957, Jaguar automobiles decided to create a D-Type body made out of fibreglass that would replace the current aluminium metal structure.

Following rigorous testing, it had been discovered that the construction, fibreglass materials and resins weren't sufficiently strong to resist the automobile's energy, and so the idea was dropped.

In February 1957, there has been a serious fire in the Coventry factory which destroyed five D-Types, together with essential jigs and tools, and damage to the manufacturing line.

As a result, this marked the end of production of the D-Type sports automobile.
