Background - a Comprehensive review|}

Just like its predecessor the C-Type, the D-Type Jaguar sports car was first|had been} constructed with the only goal of winning at Le Mans.

It did in fashion, winning the 1955, 1956, and 1957 races. |} In actuality, in 1957, the D-Type chose the initial four and sixth location, and totally routed the opposition. It was Jaguar's most prosperous race car.

Long before the 1953 victory at Le Mans from the C-Type, Jaguar automobiles had decided to produce its replacement which would keep the company ahead of the contest, which was mostly, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, and Maserati.

Back in 1953, the very first D-Type prototype, using|using} stairs XKC401, has been put through its paces in Belgium, where it attained a top speed of 178.3 miles, which was approximately 30 mph quicker than its predecessor.

By May 1954, six-D-Types had been assembled, and were regarded as the most advanced automobiles at that time.

There was an entry of four D-Types in the 1954 Le Mans race, however they have been no match to its strong Ferraris.

But in 1955, after alterations to the car, it duly notched up Jaguar Cars' third Le Mans victory.

Most of the D-Types were single seaters, and constructed especially for the race track.|}

Not merely was there a 10% reduction in the general burden of the vehicle, but also the surface region of the front section has been decreased, therefore improving air circulation over the body.

As a result of wind tunnel testing, the D-Type produced 28 percent less drag than the C-Type, although the long nosed D-Types of 1955 were 20% more effective.

The D-Type was at the forefront of sports vehicle advancement with its usage of a stressed skin monocoque central section.

This has been constructed from sheets of aluminium metal containing pre-assembled fasteners, which were subsequently welded to front and rear tubular sub-frame segments to reduce weight.

The C-Type provided the rear suspension which consisted of torsion pub rebounds. Later versions of the car used bolts, rather than welding, allowing for effortless removal for repairs.

The early automobiles used a magnesium alloy body, frame, and suspension however, by 1955, the more costly metal was replaced by aluminium and metal equivalents.

A tubular sub-frame supported the engine, steering and front suspension.

{The D-Type Jaguar sports car was powered by a contest 3.4 litre XK engine, also connected into a four speed gearbox.|}

Using a compression ratio of 9.0:1, a revised block, bigger valves, and three twin choke Weber 45 DC03 carburettors, it created 250 bhp at 6500 rpm, and 242 ft/lbs of torque.|}

This produced a high speed of 160 mph, and a 0-60 mph time of 5.7 secs.|}

From the late 1950's, the original 3.4 litre engine has been raised to 3.8 litres which currently developed 265 bhp, a high speed of 179 mph, and a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 secs.

It was equipped with disk brakes all round, independent suspension at the front and a solid axle at the rear, {and|also also|also} dry sump lubrication which decreased the elevation of the engine.

Since the surface area of the front section was diminished, the engine has been tilted slightly so that it could fit in the engine bay. {The {result|end result|consequence} of this was that the appearance of a bulge in the bonnet.|}

The 1955 D-Type sports car used bigger inlet and exhaust valves together with an asymmetrical cylinder head.

A large fin has been positioned beneath the driver's seat to be able to create aerodynamic stability from cross winds while travelling in over 150 mph. The fin has been the most recognisable characteristic of the vehicle.

Back in 1955, the duration of the works cars was increased by 7.5 inches from the addition of a longer nose which helped to raise high speed.

Also, the fin and driver's headrest were later redesigned to produce one unit to enhance aerodynamics and reduce weight.

Produced between 1954 and 1957, nearly all of its mechanical components were sourced from the C-Type.

Jaguar automobiles was keen to offer factory support to personal D-Type owners.

Initially, there must be 100 production D-Types, however this was subsequently decreased to 87 in August 1955.

Even though a number was marketed, by early 1957 when generation would soon end, a few of the remaining were converted into XKSS Jaguar sports cars, a road going version of this race car.

Later in 1957, 87 D-Types had been assembled, consisting of 18 works automobiles, 53 personal client components, and 16 XKSS variants. Of these, just ten D-Types ever secured a spot at Le Mans.

Towards the end of 1957, Jaguar automobiles chose to create a D-Type body created from fibreglass that would replace the existing aluminium metal structure.

Following rigorous testing, it was revealed that the construction, fibreglass materials and resins were not sufficiently strong to hold out against the automobile's power, and thus the idea was lost.

Back in February 1957, there has been a severe fire at the Coventry mill which destroyed five D-Types, together with crucial jigs and gear, also damage to the production line.

As a result, this marked the end of creation of the D-Type sports car.

On the other hand market for Jaguar automobiles, an original 1955 D-Type in superb condition was offered at auction in the united states for $5 million in 2014. This represented the maximum price paid for a D-Type.
