Background - a more Comprehensive review|}

Just like its predecessor the C-Type, the D-Type Jaguar sports car was first|had been} built with the only goal of winning Le Mans.

This it did in fashion, winning the 1955, 1956, and 1957 races. |} In fact, in 1957, the D-Type took the initial four and sixth location, and completely routed the resistance. It had been Jaguar's most successful race car.

Long prior to the 1953 success at Le Mans by the C-Type, Jaguar cars had decided to grow its replacement that would keep the business ahead of the competition, which had been primarily, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, and Maserati.

In 1953, the first D-Type prototype, together with|using} stairs XKC401, has been put through its paces in Belgium, where it reached a top rate of 178.3 miles, which had been around 30 mph quicker than its predecessor.

By May 1954, six-D-Types had been assembled, and were regarded as the most innovative cars at that moment.

There was an entrance of four D-Types from the 1954 Le Mans race, however they had no match for its powerful Ferraris.

But in 1955, after modifications to the car, it duly notched up Jaguar Cars' third Le Mans success.

The majority of the D-Types were single seaters, and built especially for the race track.|}

Not only was there a 10% reduction in the total weight of the car, but also the surface area of the front section has been decreased, so improving air circulation over the entire body.

As a consequence of wind tunnel testing, the D-Type produced 28% less drag than the C-Type, although the long nosed D-Types of 1955 have been 20 percent more effective.

The D-Type was at the forefront of sport car advancement with its use of a worried skin monocoque central segment.

This has been built from sheets of aluminium metal containing pre-assembled attachments, which were then welded to front and back tubular sub-frame segments to reduce weight.

The C-Type provided the rear suspension that consisted of torsion pub rebounds. Later versions of this automobile used bolts, rather than welding, to allow for effortless removal for repairs.

The early cars used a magnesium alloy frame, frame, and suspension however, by 1955, the expensive alloy was replaced with aluminium and metal equivalents.

A tubular sub-frame supported the motor, steering and front suspension.

{The D-Type Jaguar sports car was powered by a competition 3.4 litre XK engine, and linked into a four speed gearbox.|}

Using a compression ratio of 9.0:1, a revised block, bigger valves, and three twin choke Weber 45 DC03 carburettors, it created 250 bhp at 6500 rpm, and 242 ft/lbs of torque.|}

This produced a top speed of 160 mph, along with a 0-60 mph time of 5.7 secs.|}

In the late 1950's, the first 3.4 litre engine has been increased to 3.8 litres that currently developed 265 bhp, a top speed of 179 mph, along with a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 secs.

It had been equipped with disk brakes all around, independent suspension at front and a solid axle at the back, {and|and also|also} dry sump lubrication that decreased the elevation of the motor.

Since the surface area of front section had been diminished, the motor has been tilted slightly so it might fit into the engine bay. {The {result|end consequence|consequence} of this was that the visual appeal of a bulge in the bonnet.|}

The 1955 D-Type sports automobile used bigger inlet and exhaust valves as well as an asymmetrical cylinder mind.

A large fin has been set behind the driver's seat so as to create aerodynamic equilibrium in cross winds when travelling at more than 150 mph. The fin has been the most recognisable feature of the car.

In 1955, the period of the functions cars was improved by 7.5 inches by the accession of a longer nose that helped to raise top speed.

Also, the fin and also driver's headrest were later redesigned to make a single unit to improve aerodynamics and reduce weight.

Manufactured between 1954 and 1957, almost all of its mechanical components were sourced by the C-Type.

Jaguar cars was eager to offer factory service to personal D-Type owners.

Initially, there must be 100 manufacturing D-Types, however this was then decreased to 87 in August 1955.

Even though a number had been sold, by early 1957 when production will soon end, a few of the remaining were converted to XKSS Jaguar sports cars, a road going version of this race car.

Later in 1957, 87 D-Types had been assembled, consisting of 18 works cars, 53 personal client components, and 16 XKSS variants. Of them, only ten D-Types ever procured a place at Le Mans.

Towards the end of 1957, Jaguar cars chose to generate a D-Type body created from fibreglass that would replace the existing aluminium alloy structure.

After rigorous testing, it had been discovered that the construction, fibreglass materials and resins were not sufficiently strong to withstand the automobile's energy, and thus the idea was dropped.

In February 1957, there has been a serious fire at the Coventry mill which destroyed five D-Types, jointly with essential jigs and tools, plus damage to the production line.

Consequently, this marked the end of creation of this D-Type sports automobile.
