When the first Chrysler Town Car Minivan premiered at the mid-80s, it created the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) as we know it now, a vehicle with seven or eight seats that drives just like a car. It had been such a hit that it sent all automobile manufacturers, including the Japanese and Europeansback to the drawing boards to come up with their own MPV versions.

Twenty years on, using nearly every carmaker with its own interpretation of the Voyager, Chrysler has had to continually upgrade its MPVs to maintain a lead in the segment that it created. The current Grand Voyager is that most demanding model and was launched in the late 90s. It had an exterior facelift two years back, and this season it gets the revolutionary'Stow n Go' seats.

Flexibility has always been key to the allure of this MPV, but eliminating the seats and locating somewhere to store it is a problem, particularly in the Asian markets where folks do not frequently have garages. Ahead of'Stow n Go', the Grand Voyager had small castors beneath their seats so that they could be wheeled about, however they were incredibly heavy to lift out of their automobile.  The remedy is for seats which don't need to be raised out, but totally disappear into the floor.

Actually, the vanishing third row seat is not a new idea the first'96 Honda Odyssey had a third row seat that folded and turned to a well in the floor, along with the Voyager adopts the idea. But it is the fold of the next row seats that's particularly smart. Following five easy steps, along with the tugging of several straps and tabs, the entire seat literally disappears to the floor with no trace. This is even more impressive since the seat adjustment functions are not compromised when upright, it can both recline and slide.

The tip of course, is to have a seat that folds to as compact a package as you can, and this is accomplished by having both swab and backrest of equal length. This ends in a fairly low backrest to get an otherwise comfy seat. This implies that for many adults, so the headrest needs to be increased to keep it from cutting to the center of their backs.

The mechanicals of this Grand Voyager remain mostly unchanged with a torquey 3.3-litre V6 making it sense well-powered and comfy. Cruising is extremely effortless in the Chrysler, and there is an impressive lack of road- or engine-noise. It is also exceedingly well-equipped using a roof-mounted DVD player and tons of storage areas.

There is also an abundance of automation on the Grand Voyager.  The sliding back doors are power-operated, since is your tailgate, and so are the tufted back windows.

This can be controlled from the driver's seat, which is extremely convenient. {The doors can also be opened and closed remotely {with|using all|using} the key fob, helpful on rainy days or if the hands are full. |} The integration of a reversing monitor screen to the rear view mirror is also quite thoughtful - it is a surprise no one else has thought of doing so. Quite clearly, the people at Chrysler are not resting on their laurels, but have added more and more suitable features to this MPV.

The only quirk in this otherwise remarkable MPV will be that the entire steering columns, along with the stalks, have been removed from a left handed driveway vehicle. This means the column gearshift is on the driver's correct, when in many cases it is operated by the left hand. Aside from this, the Grand Voyager continues to impress, also maintains its own title as the ultimate MPV, if size and price were no object.
