When the original Chrysler Town Car Minivan premiered in the mid-80s, it generated the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) as we understand it now, a car with eight or seven chairs that drives just like a car. It had been such a hit that it shipped all car makers, including the Japanese and Europeansback to the drawing boards to come up with their own MPV models.

Twenty five years on, using nearly every carmaker using its own interpretation of this Voyager, Chrysler has had to continually upgrade its MPVs to maintain a lead from the segment that it created. The present Grand Voyager is your inaugural version and was launched from the late 90s. It had an outside facelift a couple of years back, and this season it gets the radical'Stow n Go' chairs.

Flexibility has always been crucial to the allure of the MPV, but removing the chairs and finding a place to store it is an issue, particularly in the Asian markets in which folks do not frequently have garages. Ahead of'Stow n Go', the Grand Voyager had small castors beneath their chairs so they might be wheeled around, but they were still incredibly heavy to lift out of their car.  The remedy is for chairs which don't have to be lifted out, but entirely disappear into the floor.

Actually, the disappearing third row seat isn't a new idea the original'96 Honda Odyssey was a third row seat that folded and turned right to a well from the floor, along with the Voyager adopts this idea. Nevertheless, it is the folding of the second row seats that is particularly clever. Following five easy steps, along with the tugging of several straps and tabs, the whole seat literally disappears to the floor with no trace. This is even more impressive since the seat adjustment functions aren't compromised when upright, it could both slide and recline.

The tip of course, is to have a seat which folds to as compact a package as possible, which is accomplished by using swab and backrest of equivalent length. This results in a fairly low backrest for an otherwise comfortable seat. This means that for most adults, the headrest needs to be increased to prevent it from cutting to the center of the backs.

The mechanicals of the Grand Voyager stay largely unchanged with a torquey 3.3-litre V6 making it feel well-powered and comfy. Cruising is very effortless from the Chrysler, and there is an impressive lack of road- or engine-noise. It is also very well-equipped using a roof-mounted DVD player and lots of storage places.

There's also an abundance of automation on the Grand Voyager.  Both the sliding rear doors are power-operated, since is the tailgate, and so are the hinged rear windows.

This can be controlled from the driver's seat, which is quite convenient. {The doors can also be opened and closed remotely {with|using all|using} the key fob, helpful on rainy days or if one's hands are full. |} The use of a reversing monitor display to the rear view mirror is also very thoughtful - it is a surprise nobody else has thought of doing this. Quite clearly, the people at Chrysler aren't resting on their laurels, but have always added more and more convenient features to the MPV.

The only quirk inside this otherwise remarkable MPV will be that the whole steering columns, along with the stems, have been removed from a left handed driveway car. This usually means the column gearshift is about the driver's correct, when in most cases it is run by the left hand. Apart from that, the Grand Voyager continues to impress, and maintains its title as the ultimate MPV, if size and price were not any object.
