When you think of modern-day police squad cars, you probably think of the Ford Police Interceptor, Chevy Caprice PPV or the Dodge Charger Pursuit. But did .
Chrysler has been producing Plymouth or Dodge patrol cars since the early 1930s and for many of those early years Plymouth turned out some special cars for .
The result of that quest was one of the first cars built specifically for police use, the. And it sped around the big oval at the Chrysler Proving Grounds in Chelsea, .

When the first Chrysler Police Car premiered in the mid-80s, it established the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) because we know it today, a car with seven or eight seats that drives just like a car. It had been such a hit that it shipped all automobile makers, for instance, Japanese and Europeans, back to the drawing boards to develop their own MPV models.

Twenty years on, using virtually every carmaker using its own interpretation of their Voyager, Chrysler has had to continually upgrade its MPVs to maintain a lead in the segment that it's created. The present Grand Voyager is that inaugural version and was launched in the late 90s. It had an exterior facelift a couple of decades back, and this year it will get the revolutionary'Stow n Go' seats.

Flexibility has always been key to the allure of the MPV, but eliminating the seats and locating somewhere to store it is a problem, especially in the Asian markets where individuals do not often have garages. Before'Stow n Go', the Grand Voyager had little castors beneath their seats so they could be wheeled about, however they were incredibly heavy to lift from their motor vehicle.  The remedy is for seats that don't have to be raised out, but totally disappear into the floor.

Actually, the disappearing third row seat is not a new idea the first'96 Honda Odyssey was a third row seat that folded and turned right into a well in the floor, and the Voyager adopts this idea. However, it is the fold of the next row seats that's especially clever. Following five simple steps, and the tugging of many straps and tabs, the whole chair literally disappears into the floor with no hint. This is even more impressive since the chair adjustment functions are not compromised when vertical, it can both recline and slide.

The key of course, would be to get a chair which folds into as compact a bundle as possible, and this is achieved by using the swab and backrest of equivalent length. This results in a fairly low backrest for an otherwise comfortable chair. This means that for most adults, the headrest has to be raised to block it from cutting into the center of the backs.

The mechanicals of the Grand Voyager stay largely unchanged with a torquey 3.3-litre V6 which makes it seem well-powered and relaxed. Cruising is extremely effortless in the Chrysler, and there's an impressive lack of street - or engine-noise. It's also extremely well-equipped using a roof-mounted DVD player and a great deal of storage areas.

There's also an abundance of automation around the Grand Voyager.  Both the sliding back doors are power-operated, since is the tailgate, and are the hinged rear windows.

This can be controlled by the driver's chair, which is quite convenient. {The doors can also be opened and closed remotely {with|using all|using} the key fob, helpful on rainy days or if one's hands are full. |} The integration of a Placing monitor screen into the rear view mirror is also very thoughtful - it's a surprise no one else has thought of doing so. Quite obviously, the people at Chrysler are not resting on their laurels, but also have continually added more convenient qualities to the MPV.

The only quirk inside this otherwise remarkable MPV will be that the whole steering columns, together with the stalks, have been taken from a left handed drive car. This usually means the column gearshift is on the driver's correct, when in most instances it is run by the left hand. Aside from this, the Grand Voyager continues to impress, also preserves its own name as the supreme MPV, if size and price were not any object.
