When the first Chrysler 4 Door Car was launched from the mid-80s, it generated the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) as we understand it now, a car with eight or seven chairs that drives just like a car. It had been such a hit that it shipped all automobile makers, for instance, Japanese and Europeans, back to the drawing boards to develop their own MPV versions.

Twenty years on, using virtually every carmaker having its own interpretation of this Voyager, Chrysler has had to continually upgrade its MPVs to keep a lead in the segment that it created. The current Grand Voyager is the inaugural model and has been launched in the late 90s. It had an exterior facelift two decades ago, and this year it receives the revolutionary'Stow n Go' chairs.

Flexibility has always been crucial to the allure of the MPV, but eliminating the chairs and finding somewhere to store it's an issue, especially in the Asian markets in which individuals don't often have garages. Before'Stow n Go', the Grand Voyager had small castors under their chairs so they could be wheeled around, but they were incredibly heavy to lift from their motor vehicle.  The solution is for chairs which don't have to be lifted out, but completely disappear in the floor.

Actually, the vanishing third row seat isn't a new idea the first'96 Honda Odyssey was a third row bench that folded and flipped to a well in the floor, and the Voyager adopts the idea. Nevertheless, it's the fold of the second row seats that's especially smart. After five simple steps, and the tugging of several tabs and straps, the entire seat literally disappears to the floor with no hint. This is even more impressive as the seat modification functions are not compromised when upright, it may both recline and slide.

The secret of course, is to get a seat that folds to as compact a bundle as you can, and this is accomplished by using swab and backrest of equivalent length. This ends in a rather low backrest to get an otherwise comfortable seat. This implies that for many adults, the headrest needs to be raised to prevent it from cutting to the center of the backs.

The mechanicals of the Grand Voyager stay largely unchanged with a torquey 3.3-litre V6 making it feel well-powered and relaxed. Cruising is extremely effortless in the Chrysler, and there's an impressive absence of road- or - engine-noise. It's also very well-equipped using a roof-mounted DVD player and tons of storage locations.

There is also an abundance of automation around the Grand Voyager.  Both the sliding back doors are power-operated, as is your tailgate, and are the tufted back windows.

This can be controlled from the driver's seat, which is very convenient. {The doors can also be opened and closed remotely {with|using all|using} the key fob, useful on rainy days or if one's hands are complete. |} The use of a reversing monitor display to the rear view mirror is also very thoughtful - it is a surprise no one else has thought of doing this. Quite obviously, the folks at Chrysler are not resting on their laurels, but also have added more convenient features to the MPV.

The only quirk in this otherwise remarkable MPV is that the entire steering columns, together with the stalks, have been taken from a left handed driveway vehicle. This means the column gearshift is on the driver's correct, when in many cases it's operated by the left hand. Aside from that, the Grand Voyager continues to impress, and preserves its name as the supreme MPV, if price and size were no object.
