When the original 80s Chrysler Cars premiered at the mid-80s, it established the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) since we understand it today, a vehicle with eight or seven chairs that drives like a car. It had been such a hit that it shipped all car makers, including the Japanese and Europeans, back to the drawing boards to develop their own MPV versions.

Twenty years on, using almost every carmaker having its own interpretation of the Voyager, Chrysler has needed to continuously update its MPVs to keep a lead from the section that it's created. The present Grand Voyager is the most demanding model and has been launched from the late 90s. It had an exterior facelift a couple of years back, and this season it gets the revolutionary'Stow n Go' chairs.

Flexibility has always been crucial to the allure of this MPV, but eliminating the chairs and locating somewhere to store it's a problem, particularly in the Asian markets where folks do not often have garages. Ahead of'Stow n Go', the Grand Voyager had small castors beneath their chairs so that they might be wheeled around, however they were still incredibly heavy to lift from the automobile.  The solution is for chairs that don't have to be lifted out, but entirely disappear in the floor.

In actuality, the vanishing third row seat is not a new idea the original'96 Honda Odyssey had a third row bench that folded and turned right to a well from the floor, and the Voyager adopts this idea. But it's the folding of the next row seats that is particularly clever. After five simple steps, and the tugging of several straps and tabs, the entire seat literally disappears to the floor with no trace. This is all the more impressive as the seat modification functions aren't compromised when upright, it could both recline and slide.

The tip of course, would be to get a seat which folds to as compact a bundle as possible, and this is accomplished by using swab and backrest of equal length. This ends in a fairly low backrest to get an otherwise comfortable seat. This means that for most adults, even the headrest has to be raised to prevent it from cutting to the middle of the backs.

The mechanicals of this Grand Voyager remain largely unchanged with a torquey 3.3-litre V6 which makes it feel well-powered and comfy. Cruising is extremely effortless from the Chrysler, and there is an impressive absence of road- or - engine-noise. It's also extremely well-equipped using a roof-mounted DVD player and plenty of storage areas.

There's also an abundance of automation around the Grand Voyager.  The sliding rear doors are power-operated, as is the tailgate, and are the hinged rear windows.

Everything can be controlled from the driver's seat, which is quite convenient. {The doors can also be opened and closed remotely {with|using all|using} the key fob, useful on rainy days or if the hands are complete. |} The use of a reversing monitor display to the rear view mirror is also very thoughtful - it is a surprise no one else has thought about doing so. Quite obviously, the people at Chrysler aren't resting on their laurels, but also have continually added more convenient features to this MPV.

The only quirk in this otherwise remarkable MPV is that the entire steering columns, along with the stems, have been removed from a left handed driveway vehicle. This usually means the column gearshift is about the motorist's right, when in most cases it's run by the left hand. Aside from that, the Grand Voyager continues to impress, and maintains its title as the ultimate MPV, if price and size were no object.
