When the original 70s Chrysler Cars was launched from the mid-80s, it created the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) because we know it now, a vehicle with seven or eight chairs that drives just like a car. It was such a hit that it sent all auto makers, including the Japanese and Europeans, back to the drawing boards to come up with their own MPV models.

Twenty five years on, using virtually every carmaker having its own interpretation of their Voyager, Chrysler has needed to continuously update its MPVs to keep a lead from the section that it created. The current Grand Voyager is that inaugural version and has been launched from the late 90s. It had an outside facelift two decades ago, and this year it gets the radical'Stow n Go' chairs.

Flexibility has always been key to the allure of this MPV, but removing the chairs and locating a place to store it is an issue, particularly in the Asian markets in which folks don't often have garages. Ahead of'Stow n Go', the Grand Voyager had little castors beneath their chairs so they might be wheeled around, but they were still incredibly heavy to lift from their car.  The solution is for chairs which don't have to be lifted out, but completely disappear into the floor.

Actually, the disappearing third row seat isn't a new thought the original'96 Honda Odyssey had a third row bench that folded and turned to a well from the floor, along with the Voyager adopts the thought. But it is the folding of the second row seats that's particularly clever. Following five easy steps, along with the tugging of several straps and tabs, the whole seat literally disappears to the floor with no hint. This is even more impressive as the seat adjustment functions aren't compromised when vertical, it can both recline and slide.

The secret of course, would be to get a seat which folds to as compact a package as you can, and this is accomplished by having both swab and backrest of equal length. This ends in a rather low backrest to get an otherwise comfy seat. This implies that for most adults, the headrest needs to be increased to block it from cutting to the middle of their backs.

The mechanicals of this Grand Voyager stay largely unchanged with a torquey 3.3-litre V6 which makes it sense well-powered and comfy. Cruising is extremely effortless from the Chrysler, and there's an impressive lack of street - or - engine-noise.
