Classy, elegant, chic and sporty aren't words you may typically associate with a 4x4 - and you would be exceedingly unlikely to use all of them at once to explain precisely the  same 4x4. That is until the Coming of 2017 Volvo Car Open.

Since bringing the pragmatic off-roader into the family entertainment marketplace, auto makers have striven to style it and tailor it to give  the broadest appeal, together with varying degrees of success. Some try a 4x4/MPV cross, but others go for a more laid-back SUV picture. There's even been an attempt by a premium car maker at trying to turn its big SUV into a sleek sports coupe, using notably unsleek, nay, grotesque, results!

Unlike many SUVs, VOLVO manages to maintain, and even improve, the svelte lines and subtle shapes of its more lightweight saloon and estate brethren.  In fact, in the event that you lowered an XC60 to make it adopt a road-hugging position, then it would definitely appear like a somewhat rakish sports estate. Volvo calls it"emotional" styling.

Cabin Comfort

You wouldn't accuse the VOLVO's inside of becoming overdone. It is modem, fresh, fashionable and, most importantly, easy. The all-anthracite lower-half cut of our evaluation example may seem laborious and dull in a few cars, but using more to lift it than white contrast stitching and environmentally implemented smart moldings, the Volvo manages an air of smart practicality. You'd expect nothing less from Swedish design.

undoubtedly Volvo's now well known'floating' centre console, in this case having a bright metallic finish.  It presents a range of logically-arranged and clearly-marked controls - that the human-shaped air-distribution graphic being a specific case in point - which become nearly instinctive at first glance. Above this and the CD slot resides both the transparent sat-nav screen, somewhat inset to cut reflections from the window glass  found on precisely the  same|identical} plane as the tools where a fast glance enables instant visual clarity with no refocusing.

Gauges - only the two - convey the crucial details through annular analogue dials and (that phrase again)'floating' pointers with digital supplementary information exhibited in their facilities|centres|facilities}. They've a chronographic look  to  them, but Volvo has thankfully resisted the usually Far-Eastern car manufacturers' trend to decorate them with too much bling and fancy lighting.

In true Volvo convention, the chairs are well-shaped, inviting and comfortable using those in front providing a handy assortment of adjustment. The back compartment boasts reasonable if not commodious legroom, and the nicely contoured seat should supply three teenaged adults with cozy but comfortable travel. The 40:20:40 split/fold seat provides a flat load floor once the one-touch release levers are worked.

Zoned climate control gives a degree (actually, a number of levels ) of heating/cooling flexibility and clean cabin atmosphere utilizing filtration and Volvo's Clean Zone Interior Package, an advanced air-purging system.

Driving Dynamics

motors make lots of sense, being as responsive as a'four' yet nearly as simple as a'six','' even though the smoothness bit is less apparent using an oil burner.  Once warmed up, however, the D5 is a pleasant enough petrol, providing lively performance in concert with the smooth-shifting six-speed Geartronic transmission, and which likewise has Sport mode and manual override.

Having originally believed the steering over-weighted, a couple miles later it appeared to sense faster and more reactive. Speed-dependent assistance is available as an alternative, based on version, using a user-selection centre.

In normal conditions the all-wheel drive process is front-biased, using torque re-apportioned through the computer-controlled hydraulic clutch because readily available grip alters. Volvo's Immediate Traction was made to help with standing starts. Ride is very firm (maybe as a result of BMW X3 having an XC60 benchmark) but provides car-like cornering and handling, though well-judged initial compliance takes the sting out of several road imperfections.

The Volvo's City Safety helps avoid low-speed accidents; Collision Caution with Vehicle Brake and Adaptive Cruise Control using Distance Alert operate at higher speeds; BUS shows that your blind areas; DAC and LDW try to stop you falling asleep or straight out of lane; and IDIS delays telephone calls as you deal with complex driving situations. programs may be obtained along with Volvo's renowned safety design and engineering assisted by Roll Stability Control, Hill Descent Control, Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, and Trailer Stability Assist.  Oh, and there's Park Assist...

Pulling Performance

The Volvo's 90kg nose weight supplies a great perimeter to accommodate most appropriate caravans, and rectangular, straight-edged door mirrors give a better platform than most for towing mirrors.

The XC60 was shown to be lively, turning into a 0-60mph period of 14.5 minutes despite initial take-off being calmed by the automated gearbox. . Hill starts were equally as trouble-free. The costume felt very unruffled in urban conditions, possibly as a result of assurance of City Safety, and using a 30-50mph period of 6.1 sec was seldom in danger of holding up other traffic. Normal automobile mode dealt well, easily discovering itself in the ideal gear at the ideal moment.

The steering might occasionally feel a bit stranger from tight, twisty metropolitan conditions but enhanced at higher speeds to become smooth, more responsive and precise, in which the Volvo felt in full control through strings of minor-road bends. On steep descents manual gear selection could be useful, however, the powerful wheels using their various driver- assistance systems supplied reassurance.

At motorway speeds the XC60 tracked straight and accurate, however on a very windy evaluation day some buffeting has been seasoned, as was a few enforced deviation offline from big overtaking trucks and trainers.

Ride comfort in all conditions was firm, though seldom uncomfortably so, and the XC60 managed to damp out the caravan's bulge reactions very efficiently over all but the worst ruts.

Verdict

Think of this SUV as a tall, slinky, blonde Swede that'll not have a blonde moment, yet is very XC.
