The 2011 Jaguar Xj - Performance, Technical Data, Features, Comparisons, History - a detailed review|}

from Classic to Modern

Just like its predecessor the C-Type, the D-Type Jaguar sports car had been first|had been} constructed with the sole purpose of winning at Le Mans.

This it did in style, winning the 1955, 1956, and 1957 races. |} In fact, in 1957, the D-Type chose the first four and sixth location, and completely routed the resistance. It had been Jaguar's very prosperous race car.

Long before the 1953 success at Le Mans from the C-Type, Jaguar automobiles had decided to develop its replacement which could keep the business ahead of the competition, which had been primarily, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, and Maserati.

Back in 1953, the very first D-Type prototype, using|using} stairs XKC401, was put through its paces at Belgium, in which it attained a top rate of 178.3 mph, which had been approximately 30 mph quicker than its predecessor.

From May 1954, six-D-Types had been assembled, and were regarded as the most innovative automobiles at that time.

There was an entry of four D-Types in the 1954 Le Mans race, however they had no match for its powerful Ferraris.

But in 1955, following modifications to the car, it duly notched up Jaguar Cars' next Le Mans success.

Most of the D-Types were single seaters, and constructed especially for the race track.|}

Not merely was there a 10 percent decrease in the overall weight of the vehicle, but also the surface area of the front section was decreased, therefore improving air flow within the body.

As a result of wind tunnel testing, the D-Type produced 28 percent less drag than the C-Type, whilst the extended nosed D-Types of 1955 were 20% more efficient.

The D-Type was at the forefront of sports vehicle advancement with its usage of a stressed skin monocoque central section.

This was constructed from sheets of aluminium alloy incorporating riveted attachments, which were then welded to front and back tubular sub-frame sections to reduce weight.

The C-Type provided the rear suspension which consisted of torsion pub perched. Later versions of this automobile used bolts, instead of welding, allowing for simple removal for repairs.

The first automobiles used a magnesium alloy frame, frame, and suspension however, by 1955, the expensive alloy was replaced by aluminium and steel equivalents.

A tubular sub-frame affirmed the motor, steering and front suspension.

{The D-Type Jaguar sports car was powered by a competition 3.4 litre XK engine, and connected into a four speed gearbox.|}

With a compression ratio of 9.0:1, a revised cube, bigger valves, and three twin choke Weber 45 DC03 carburettors, it developed 250 bhp at 6500 rpm, and 242 ft/lbs of torque.|}

This produced a high speed of 160 mph, and a 0-60 mph time of 5.7 secs.|}

In the late 1950's, the first 3.4 litre engine was increased to 3.8 litres which currently developed 265 bhp, a high speed of 179 mph, and a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 secs.

It had been equipped with disk brakes all round, independent suspension at front and a solid axle at the back, {and|and also|also} dry sump lubrication which decreased the elevation of the motor.

Since the surface area of front section had been diminished, the motor was tilted slightly so it would fit in the engine bay. {The {result|end result|consequence} of this was the look of a bulge in the bonnet.|}

The 1955 D-Type sports automobile used bigger inlet and exhaust valves as well as an asymmetrical cylinder head.

A massive fin was positioned behind the driver's seat to be able to make aerodynamic stability from cross winds while travelling in over 150 mph. The fin was the most recognisable feature of the vehicle.

Back in 1955, the period of the works cars was improved by 7.5 inches from the addition of a more nose which helped to raise high speed.

Additionally, the fin and driver's headrest were later redesigned to produce a single unit to enhance aerodynamics and reduce weight.

Manufactured between 1954 and 1957, most of its mechanical components were sourced by the C-Type.

Jaguar automobiles was keen to give factory service to personal D-Type owners.

Originally, there must be 100 generation D-Types, however, this was subsequently decreased to 87 at August 1955.

Although a number had been marketed, by early 1957 when production will soon end, a few of the remaining were converted to XKSS Jaguar sports cars, a road going version of this race car.

Later in 1957, 87 D-Types had been assembled, consisting of 18 works automobiles, 53 personal customer components, and 16 XKSS variants. Of them, just ten D-Types ever procured a spot at Le Mans.

Towards the end of 1957, Jaguar automobiles decided to make a D-Type body created out of fibreglass that could replace the current aluminium alloy structure.

After rigorous testing, it had been discovered that the structure, fibreglass materials and resins weren't sufficiently strong to resist the automobile's power, and so the idea was lost.

Back in February 1957, there was a serious fire at the Coventry mill which destroyed five D-Types, jointly with fundamental jigs and gear, also damage to the manufacturing line.

Consequently, this marked the end of creation of this D-Type sports automobile.
