When the original 1990 Chrysler Cars premiered in the mid-80s, it created the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) because we understand it today, a car with seven or eight seats that drives just like a car. It was such a hit that it sent all auto makers, including the Japanese and Europeans, back to the drawing boards to develop their own MPV models.

Twenty five years on, using nearly every carmaker using its own interpretation of their Voyager, Chrysler has had to continuously update its MPVs to keep a lead in the section that it's created. The current Grand Voyager is the inaugural model and was launched in the late 90s. It had an outside facelift a couple of decades ago, and this year it receives the revolutionary'Stow n Go' seats.

Flexibility has always been key to the allure of the MPV, but eliminating the seats and finding somewhere to store it is a problem, particularly in the Asian markets where folks do not often have garages. Ahead of'Stow n Go', the Grand Voyager had little castors beneath their seats so they might be wheeled about, but they were still incredibly heavy to lift from the motor vehicle.  The remedy is for seats which don't have to be raised out, but totally disappear into the floor.

In actuality, the disappearing third row seat isn't a new idea the original'96 Honda Odyssey was a third row bench that folded and turned right to a well in the floor, along with the Voyager adopts this idea. However, it is the folding of the second row seats that's particularly smart. This ends in a fairly low backrest for an otherwise comfortable seat. This implies that for most adults, the headrest needs to be increased to prevent it from cutting to the center of their backs.

The mechanicals of the Grand Voyager stay largely unchanged with a torquey 3.3-litre V6 which makes it feel well-powered and relaxed. Cruising is very effortless in the Chrysler, and there's an impressive absence of road- or - engine-noise. It's likewise exceedingly well-equipped using a roof-mounted DVD player and lots of storage locations.

There is also an abundance of automation around the Grand Voyager.  The sliding back doors are power-operated, as is your tailgate, and so are the tufted back windows.

The only quirk in this otherwise remarkable MPV is that the whole steering columns, along with the stems, are removed from a left handed push car. This means the column gearshift is to the motorist's right, when in most cases it is run by the left hand. Aside from this, the Grand Voyager continues to impress, and maintains its own name as the supreme MPV, if price and size were not any object.
